I Got Baking Soda!

My pleasurable night of relaxing was suddenly turned to disgust and anger. How? I was sitting in my house relaxing and enjoying the evening when my daughter came to tell me that my eight year old son was singing, “I got baking soda, baking soda.” Was he singing about baking a cake with my wife (obvious sarcasm)? I was unfamiliar with the song so I went to YouTube and typed “I got baking soda.” A second later, O.T. Genasis’ song CoCo pops up with over 46 million views. Sadly, I gave it one more view.

As I listened and watched, I could not believe the content of the video. Coco is an

ode to crack cocaine with catchy refrains like “I’m in love with the coco” and “I got baking soda, baking soda!” My young son was repeating these hooks unaware of the sinister evil the song encouraged. How can a song that glamorizes the cooking, distribution, selling and use of crack cocaine be something that is appealing and acceptable to the masses? Crack has destroyed numerous families and killed many of its users. The #blacklivesmatter campaign is seeking to save Black children. Should they ignore the promotion of a drug that is slaughtering people by the thousands? Do Black lives really matter? What does the Bible say about drug use and/or the promotion of drug use?

I Corinthians 3: 16-17 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

The Lord commands us against destroying our bodies. One of the ways we defile our temples in this present day is by abusing drugs and getting high. It is a sin that we must stop committing.

Psalms 52:1-7 Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually. Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah. Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue. God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah. The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him: Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.

The Lord is showing the wicked that when they boast about their evil deeds, it does not go unnoticed. There will be judgment for all the evil words they speak. Boasting and bragging about getting high, selling drugs and getting paid from them are just some of the wickedness that our people boast about in their music.

Matthew 12:36-37 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

I John 2:15-17 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

If Black lives really matter, then the message that should be promoted to all people is the message of repentance and keeping the commandments. We shouldn’t “love the coco” that destroys us as a people. We should love the Most High that will help us live forever if we do his will.
