Georgia lottery winner killed in home invasion

Luke 12:13-15 And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. 14 And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? 15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

Coveting is not a new thing in the earth but something that people have always had a problem with. It is a dangerous sin as we can see in the above referenced scripture. This man’s brother received an inheritance which he desired to have for himself. He went to Christ to see if he would talk to his brother for him. Christ then explains that our life is not about all the material things that we possess.

People become covetous when they have a wicked desire for what other people possess. In the case of this lottery winner, coveting unfortunately turned to murder. We often lust for what other people have when we should be satisfied with the blessings we have already received.

To murder someone for their possessions is a senseless and horrific sin in the eyes of the Lord. The sins of murder and covetousness are both condemned in the Lord’s Ten Commandments which most people are very familiar with.

Exodus 20:13  Thou shalt not kill.

Exodus 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

Our condolences go out to the victim’s family.
