Teaching Our Children About Sexual Abuse

A recent news radio story has stirred this article. The story focused on disabled children that are sexually abused and how it is a large problem that goes unnoticed because as one of the victims put it, “We are taught to trust grown-ups more than anyone else would be. Because when you have a disability, people are always telling you, ‘Do as that person says,’ ‘Do as this person says.’ ”

There have been many stories in the news recently about sexual abuse and by now just about everyone should’ve heard of the “Me too” movement where it seems like an allegation is coming out just about everyday about a famous individual.

Most people should also be aware of the trial of Larry Nassar and all of his victims testifying in court.

According to data from the Justice Department on sex crimes, people with disabilities are victims of sexual abuse seven times more than those without disabilities.

One of the disturbing things from the news story is that some of the perpetrators told their victims not to say anything to anyone because they are now their boyfriends and what they’re doing is ok.

So where do you start when you want to teach your children about sexual abuse? Because the deceptiveness is endless and almost all sexual abuse have a common denominator-the perpetrator is always someone the victim knows and in a lot of cases trust or is taught to trust.

To some people this might seem far-fetched or not applicable, however, it is the right thing to do because God’s word is a guide to all of our lives.

We start by teaching our children about what marriage and fornication is and intimate things that should only happen between a man and a woman when they’re married.

Hebrews 13:4 Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

This scripture lets us know that it’s an honorable thing to be married in the eyes of God and whatever is done in the bedroom is clean (undefiled) in his sight and that any thing outside of that, is not considered clean and will be judged by him.

So to further break it down; any sort of intimate thing-kissing, touching of private parts, sex-whether oral, vaginal, anal should not be done outside of a marriage.

Some people may cringe at the fact that they have to be so graphical, but in today’s world you have to be. There are a large segment of kids who are being taught and believe that oral or anal sex is not sex because they’re not being penetrated the “traditional” way. So you have, mostly young girls who’re doing just that or being coerced to do that and thinking it is ok because they’re not having vaginal sex.

So when you teach your children about sexual abuse you should let them know that if anyone is doing that to them, it is not right and they should report it. It doesn’t matter if they know the person or was told to do whatever they say.

You may ask, what about the case then of Larry Nassar, “he was a doctor who was treating these kids and certain procedures has to be done by a doctor, how do you teach your kid about that?”

The same scripture applies. These girls that brought it to the forefront had enough sense to know that something wasn’t right, because they went to him to be treated for sports injuries and were assaulted, only to be told that it was “a form of treatment.”

Also, when we teach our children what the scriptures says, it makes them wise in everything and they’ll be able to tell right from wrong.

2 Timothy 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Another important aspect of teaching our children about sexual abuse is that, you wanna have a relationship with them where they can come and talk to you about anything and you’re not being dismissive, thinking it’s a figment of their imagination or flying off at the handle of what you’re hearing.

James 1:19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
