Chicago’s Gun Violence

It seems like every other day we’re hearing about some killing that has taken place in Chicago. The wave of violence that has swept Chicago in recent months and weeks have left the nation stunned and people crying out for justice and for the gun violence to end.

A lot of the victims just so happens to be teenagers and also so called “minorities.” Recently, a teenager who just performed at the president’s inauguration-got shot while sitting outside with her friends. It has also been recently reported that a mother lost all four of her children over a period of years due to the violence that has taken place on the streets of Chicago.

Would you believe that the bible actually has something to say about this?

Not just about a particular city, like in this case Chicago, but wherever the Israelites would be brought into captivity all over the world, certain curses would plague us. The steep hatred we have for one another, in not even thinking twice about killing our own is one of the curses that was pronounced upon us.

The people that are committing these acts and also the victims are the descendants of slaves that were brought into this country. When you read in the book of Deuteronomy where Moses was leading the Israelites out of Egypt, the Lord warned them that they would not stay in the promise land forever because they would become evil and not keep his commandments and as a result, they would go into different captivities (slavery) throughout the years, even up until the latter times that we’re living in now.

Deuteronomy 4:25-27  When thou shalt beget children, and children’s children, and ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the Lord thy God, to provoke him to anger:

26 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over Jordan to possess it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed.

27 And the Lord shall scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen, whither the Lord shall lead you.

Deuteronomy 28:64-66 And the Lord shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone.

65 And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the Lord shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind:

66 And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life:

Deuteronomy 4:30-31 When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the Lord thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice;

31 (For the Lord thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.

The Lord tells us that even when these things are happening to us, if we turn to him and do his commandments, he would have mercy upon us.

So we see that the answer is not in having stricter gun laws, as Chicago has one of the strictest and it obviously has no effect on the violence taking place. Having celebrities or politicians speaking to the young people also makes no difference.

The remedy comes from us teaching our children the commandments like,

Exodus 23:2 Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment:

To use today’s language, teach our children to not join a gang (that’s following a multitude to do evil, one example of it) and also teach our children that if they witness a murder or any other wicked act, they should not say that they’re not going to snitch on the person (…speak in a cause to decline…) but tell the authorities who did it.

When Christ walked the earth, it was filled with violence and wickedness back then also and what do you think his message was to the people? Have a march to protest the Roman government and how they weren’t doing anything to help the people or did he lead a rally with an End the Violence sign?

Matthew 4:16-17  The people which sat in darkness (wickedness) saw great light (Jesus Christ); and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.

17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Christ message was repentance and he also told his disciples to go out and preach the same thing.

Repent means, to turn from sin and dedicate oneself to the amendment of one’s life.
