A man that avoided a 13 year prison sentence for armed robbery was recently freed by a Missouri Judge. The Judge was quoted as saying, Mike Anderson’s 13 years crime free prove that he is a changed man. It was a fascinating legal dilemma that attracted international attention. On one side were those who feared that freeing Anderson would send the wrong message to criminal and others who argued that Anderson’s life after his conviction was proof that he was a changed man.

The scriptures tell us clearly in the Lord’s Ten Commandments that it is a sin to steal. That being said, there are still tremendous discrepancies between the punishment levied according to the Holy Bible and the punishments levied by man. According to the laws of man, a person guilty of theft may be sent to prison for decades. All too often in this world we witness men and women who lose their lives to the criminal justice system for petty and often non-violent thefts. No excuses are being made for their crimes, but the question remains, how can a person rotting in prison make restitutions to the victim and restore what was taken. Alternatively, the Holy Bible does not prescribe a prison sentence for theft. Instead, the thief is commanded to repent and make restitutions for what he has stolen. The wisdom of the Laws of God dictates that the victim of theft be recompensed while the criminal is given opportunity for redemption.

Exodus 22 22 If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. 2 If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him. 3 If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. 4 If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double.

Leviticus 6 1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 If a soul sin, and commit a trespass against the LORD, and lie unto his neighbour in that which was delivered him to keep, or in fellowship, or in a thing taken away by violence, or hath deceived his neighbour; 3 Or have found that which was lost, and lieth concerning it, and sweareth falsely; in any of all these that a man doeth, sinning therein:4 Then it shall be, because he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took violently away, or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found, 5 Or all that about which he hath sworn falsely; he shall even restore it in the principal, and shall add the fifth part more thereto, and give it unto him to whom it appertaineth, in the day of his trespass offering.

Proverbs 6:30 30 Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;31 But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.

Mike Anderson is a free man now due in no small part to the life he has led over the last 13 years. He has earned an honest living by becoming a Master Carpenter. He has married and raised four children. During this time he has not returned to a life of crime but has been and exemplary example of a law abiding citizen. Insomuch that the victim of his crime and the prosecuting attorney also sought to free him. This proves once more the irrefutable wisdom of God contained in the Holy Bible.

Romans 13:3 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

Although Mike Anderson may not truly understand it now, it was the wisdom of the Holy Bible and the spirit of repentance that delivered him from a 13 year prison sentence away from his wife and children.
